The difficulty of accessing sport and healthy living for people with visual impairments (more than 50% of whom suffer from chronic non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity and do not have healthy lifestyle habits) is hampered by their locations not being very central, a lack of information, and their lack of inclusiveness.
What the project involves
The aim of the project is to prevent the onset of and delay the symptoms of chronic non-communicable diseases in users of the Centro de Grabación para ciegos Viña del Mar through a six-month programme of physical activity and healthy living.
Activities include a programme of 48 cardiovascular and muscular conditioning classes and the promotion of healthy lifestyle habits for six months, with sessions scheduled twice a week, as well as a lecture series on nutrition.
Expected Outcomes
- Adoption of healthy lifestyles
- Preventing and delaying the impact of chronic non-communicable diseases
- Enhancing people's dignity
The beneficiaries
The project beneficiaries include 30 active members (and any companions) of the Centro de Grabación para ciegos Viña del Mar: men and women of all ages with a diagnosis of medium, severe, or complete visual impairment due to degenerative diseases, accidents, or blindness from birth. The indirect beneficiaries include households and their closest social circles.
